Stair Nosings or Stair Edgings, are shaped and profiled strips of material (usually metal or uPVC) that are fitted on the edge of steps. They should span the full width of the step and should provide an anti slip function to step edges. They should also provide luminance contrast between step edge and surrounding step surfaces.

There are four basic shapes (profiles) that fit the nose profile of the step. These are as follows:
Square
Bull-nosed
Raked Back
Chevron
Square stair nosing is fitted to steps that are at a 90º angle to the tread.
Bull-nosed stair nosings are fitted to steps that have a round edge, a wide majority of which are found when installing stair nosing to a wooden staircase.
Raked back stair nosings are fitted to steps that are at an 83º angle to the tread. Rake back staircases are common in more modern applications
Chevron stair nosings are often used to accommodate all step profiles.
The above four main profiles are the standard shapes that a stair nosing will follow. These four profiles are available in different materials, colors and sizes e.g. size of the tread and riser will vary depending upon the installation requirements.
We can also supply a ramped designs for safety (anti trip hazard). These ramp edged stair nosings are most suitable for laminate floors, vinyl and lightweight carpet coverings. Exterior stair nosings - without inserts - drilled or stickdown also are available
Gauge refers to the thickness of the stair nosing. The floor covering thickness will determine the gauge of the stair nosing.
Building Regulations
We can supply Light Reflectance Values (LRVS) for stair nosing where required, to comply with building regulations. Individuals with impaired sight risk tripping or losing their balance if there is no visual reference or warning that steps provide a change in level. The risk is highest at the head of a flight of steps when a person is descending. The change in level can be clearly highlighted with a nosing that contrasts with the surrounding tread and riser materials. Our method of installation means changing top step insert colours is a formality. The colour contrast variation should be at least 30 points (for example black to white is 100 points) on all treads. We can advise that nosings are made apparent by means of a permanently contrasting material on both the tread and riser. Other considerations, such as step size and type, should be taken when choosing a nosing.
Installation of Stair Nosings
Ensure that the stair surface is level and flat.
Select the most suitable cartridge adhesive for interior/exterior usage.
Ensure stairs are clean and free of debris, dust, grease and oil.
Check the stair is dry and free from dampness
Select the nosing carrier and check for the correct fit on the required stair.
Do not apply the insert material at this stage.
Carefully mark through the drill holes, ensuring that the nosing is tight against the riser, carpet or vinyl.
Remove nosing from the stair, and drill and plug the tread ready for installation.
Apply the adhesive to the underside of the nosing and replace on the step.
Remove the nosing and allow the adhesive to cure for the recommended time.
Replace and refit the nosing carrier to the stair tread, and screw down firmly.
Ensure that the screws are flush to avoid 'show through' on the insert material.
Peel back the double sided tape, ensuring no dust or fibre is allowed onto the surface.
Place insert material (smooth side down) into the channel from both ends, and smooth into the middle of the profile.
Maintenance of stair Nosing and Trims
To maintain the appearance and performance of Treads stair nosings to the highest standards, we recommend the following maintenance regime:
Avoid acids, alkalis, strong detergents and any type of polish that may reduce the anti-slip properties of the nosing.
Weekly cleaning is advised, but a more frequent regime needs to be considered in heavy traffic areas.
Remove immediately any build up of dirt and grease that may cause a hazard.
Clean inserts with a mild detergent diluted in water.
Carefully wipe over the nosing with a damp cloth and then wipe dry with a clean dry cloth.
For long term care the aluminium can be lightly buffed using a suitable burnished steel wool.
Templates should be supplied on card or similar weight material.
Take the template from the extreme front edge of the step, including a minimum of 250mm of the straight section.
On the top of the template please include the following information:
Customer name
Profile type and number
Insert colour
Drilled or undrilled

The part of the step/nosing that the foot is placed on.
Riser
The vertical part of the step/nosing
Tread Material
This is the anti slip material that is secured in the channel of the stair nosing. It is also known as the Infill material
Gauge
This term describes the thickness of a floor covering. Quantum use two gauges: slim gauge (Eg vinyl flooring) and heavy gauge (eg carpet)
DDA
Stands for Disability Discrimination Act – part of Approved Document M where the main reference to stair nosing is “All nosings are made apparent by means of a permanently contrasting material 55mm wide on both the tread on the riser” full information on the DDA guidelines can be seen here
Secret Fixing
A method of installation that hides the fixing screws. The tread material is supplied separate to the stair nosing, the nosing is installed on the step before the tread material is secured in place covering the screw heads.
Dim/Diminishing Strip
Is another name for our bevel strips and describe a profile that ramps from nothing to a set gauge.
Weld Rod
Is used in conjunction with our skirting’s to create a thermal, waterproof bond between them and a vinyl floor covering. Quantum have a number of different colours available to suit most floor coverings.
